Archaelogist have found that man first used some form of an oil lamp over 20,000 years ago.</p><br /> <p>Available materials such as clay or shells were used and the wick was nothing more than an permeable material to submerge in the oil, like the Diya. They were often made with whatever materials were obtainable and there are many examples that have been found that are made from earthenware like the Diya which was ultimately a bowl with a wick made of cotton. Diyas are native to India, and are generally used in Hindu, Sikh, and Jain spiritual festivals such as Diwali. Oil lamps in other parts of the world were created using terracotta or brass.</p><br /> <p>As man developed the oil lamp changed. The overall design was the similar but the vessel that held the oil had a nozzle added to hold the wick and a cavity to pour in the oil on top to isolate the oil pool from the flame. A grip was added for carrying and at times holes were added to help hang the lamp. These little changes made the oil lamp safer to make use of and allowed it to burn more efficiently.</p><br /> <p>In the 15th century, Da Vinci added a glass tube to protect the flame which helped lessen the flicker and keep it from wind. The next major development came in 1780 when Aime Argand invented a tubular kind wick that was installed between a pair of cylindrical metal tubes. This was done so that the air needed to burn the wick was channeled not only on the outside of the wick, but up through the interior of it.. This improved the brightness of the flame and less smoke was produced. This improvement helped cause more complete combustion of the wick, which, in turn, needed much less snuffing (trimming down). Argand's type of lamp along with scores of variations of it were used well into the 20th century. The creation of the light bulb by Thomas Edison took over but the basic fashion of this lamp, even though it used electric, remained the same.
